What is Deuterium?

Hydrogen is the lightest element in the universe. About 1 in every 6,400 hydrogen atoms in nature has an extra neutron tucked inside its nucleus — making it heavier. This heavier isotope is called deuterium, written as D or ²H. Same chemistry as ordinary hydrogen, but measurably heavier.

Heavy Water

When deuterium combines with oxygen instead of ordinary hydrogen, the resulting water molecule is called heavy water (HDO or D₂O). It looks identical to regular water. It tastes identical. But each molecule is measurably heavier. About 150 mg of heavy water is dissolved in every litre of normal drinking water — six drops in every glass.

ATP — Energy Currency

Adenosine triphosphate is the molecule your body spends to do everything. Lifting a finger, thinking a thought, building a protein, beating a heart. The molecule has three phosphate groups linked by high-energy bonds; breaking the last bond releases the energy that powers the cell.

Mitochondria

Every cell in your body contains hundreds to thousands of mitochondria — bean-shaped power plants. Inside them, an enzyme called ATP synthase spins like a turbine, generating ATP from the flow of protons (hydrogen ions). It is one of the most beautiful nanomachines in nature.

Cancer Cells

Cancer cells are cells that have lost their growth controls. Their mitochondria are damaged, their metabolism is distorted (the Warburg effect), and they multiply chaotically. Researchers including the HYD group have studied whether lowering the deuterium load on damaged mitochondria may be relevant to oncology. This is research, not a cure.

Healthy Cells

A healthy cell has well-organised internal architecture: a defined nucleus, properly functioning mitochondria, and a tightly controlled chemical balance. Its mitochondrial ATP synthase runs cleanly. Its metabolism is responsive to demand. The hypothesis behind DDW is that lowering the deuterium load may help these processes run with less drag.

Deuterium Depletion

You cannot filter deuterium out of water with a standard filter, reverse osmosis or simple distillation. Producing deuterium-depleted water (DDW) requires multi-stage vacuum fractional distillation: water is evaporated and condensed repeatedly in tall stainless columns, separating light water from heavy water by their tiny vapour-pressure difference. Every batch we make is verified by mass spectrometry.
